Welcome!  This is my eleventh year teaching at Gresham High School.  I will be teaching two sections each of junior-level IB English A Literature HL and four sections of freshman English 1-2.

Before starting my career at GHS, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at Swarthmore College and then later earned my Master of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College's Graduate School of Education.  In between, I served for two as an Americorps member, coordinating service learning and other youth programs.  Since then, my coursework and conference attendance has centered around teaching-related topics such as literacy, English language, critical thinking, assessment practices, AVID, and the International Baccalaureate program.  Outside of school, I love reading (no surprise there), watching films, hiking, gardening, traveling, and time with family and friends.

Please check out my SchoolFusion pages if you're looking for class-related resources.  If you have any questions, please contact me by email at hakala3@gresham.k12.or.us or by phone at (503) 674-5500.
